Classification and Features of Dangerous Goods

According to international classification, dangerous goods are divided into several classes, each with its own characteristics, hazards, physical and chemical properties, types, and levels of risk during transportation. These classes are further divided into subclasses, categories, and groups.

Class 1: Explosive substances and articles capable of causing explosions or fire, including devices containing explosive materials and ignition systems used in pyrotechnics:

Subclass 1.1 – substances and articles with a mass explosion hazard;
Subclass 1.2 – substances and articles with a projection hazard but no mass explosion;
Subclass 1.3 – substances and articles with fire hazard and minor blast effect;
Subclass 1.4 – substances and articles with minor explosion risk during transport (packaging remains intact);
Subclass 1.5 – very insensitive substances with a mass explosion hazard but extremely low probability of detonation during transport;
Subclass 1.6 – extremely insensitive articles with no mass explosion hazard.

Class 2: Compressed, liquefied, dissolved under pressure, or refrigerated gases meeting one or more defined conditions:

Gases are classified by physical state into compressed, liquefied, refrigerated liquefied, and dissolved gases, including aerosols subject to specific regulations.

Subclass 2.1 – non-flammable gases;
Subclass 2.2 – toxic non-flammable gases;
Subclass 2.3 – flammable gases;
Subclass 2.4 – toxic flammable gases;
Subclass 2.5 – chemically unstable gases;
Subclass 2.6 – toxic chemically unstable gases.

Class 3: Flammable liquids, mixtures, and solutions that emit flammable vapors with a flash point of 61°C or lower:

Subclass 3.1 – highly flammable liquids (flash point below -18°C);
Subclass 3.2 – flammable liquids with flash point from -18°C to +23°C;
Subclass 3.3 – flammable liquids with flash point from +23°C to +61°C.

Class 4: Flammable solids and substances (excluding explosives) that can easily ignite due to friction, moisture absorption, heating, or chemical reactions:

Subclass 4.1 – flammable solids that ignite easily and burn intensely;
Subclass 4.2 – spontaneously combustible substances;
Subclass 4.3 – substances that emit flammable gases upon contact with water.

Class 5: Oxidizing substances and organic peroxides that release oxygen, support combustion, and may cause explosions:

Subclass 5.1 – oxidizing substances that intensify combustion;
Subclass 5.2 – organic peroxides, often combustible and highly reactive.

Class 6: Toxic and infectious substances that may cause poisoning, illness, or death:

Subclass 6.1 – toxic substances harmful if swallowed, inhaled, or in contact with skin;
Subclass 6.2 – infectious materials containing dangerous microorganisms.

Class 7: Radioactive materials with specific activity exceeding 2 nCi/g (70 kBq/kg).

Class 8: Corrosive substances that damage skin, materials, and structures and may cause chemical burns or fires:

Subclass 8.1 – alkalis;
Subclass 8.2 – acids;
Subclass 8.3 – other corrosive substances.

Class 9: Miscellaneous dangerous substances that do not fall into other classes but require special handling and transportation conditions:

Subclass 9.1 – combustible materials not included in Classes 3 or 4 but potentially hazardous;
Subclass 9.2 – substances that become corrosive under certain conditions.
